Ezeliya ends Dermot Weld’s 43-year wait for second Epsom Oaks triumph

There was an irony to it all. While Princess Zahra Aga Khan found her plane grounded in France, her father’s fabulous filly Ezeliya took flight in Epsom to make history.

A table was waiting for Princess Zahra in the Royal Box, where King Charles and Queen Camilla were present for the Betfred Oaks. Due to technical issues, however, she was unable to travel and what a shame that was because she missed a quite spectacular performance from the Dermot Weld-trained Ezeliya in the middle-distance Classic for fillies.

Ezeliya, who went off 13-2, had three lengths to spare over second-placed Dance Sequence but the proximity flattered the runner-up. As soon as jockey Chris Hayes crossed the line, punching the air, ante-post odds for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe began to arrive and none of it felt premature.

Weld is one of the finest target trainers in the business. He is 75 but his sense of what assignment is right for his horses is still as sharp as ever and this was the 25th Classic he has landed in Britain and Ireland but his first Epsom Oaks since 1981.

‘Chris gave her a beautiful ride,’ Weld said. ‘That was the plan, to drop her out last. She loves to come from off the pace and she had the race won a long way out. She got a lovely run down the hill. Chris got her balanced and into a rhythm before he let her go.’

Hayes added: ‘It’s unbelievable to be getting to ride for these connections, and the faith they put in me, not only here but every day — it feels like I am finally getting on proper horses, and I hope I am able to do them justice.’

War Chimes, at 50-1, finished third for trainer David Menuisier, while 11-8 favourite Ylang Ylang never got competitive and finished sixth for Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore.

Thailand suspends patent applications for medical marijuana

BANGKOK (AP) – Thailand’s military government on Monday suspended the licensing of commercial marijuana-based products for medical use amid concern that foreign pharmaceutical companies might try to monopolize the market.

The decree says it will remain in effect until legislation on medical marijuana comes into force. Parliament last month legalized the regulated use of medical marijuana but the legislation must be signed by King Maha Vajiralongkorn to become law. At that point, new applications are expected to be allowed that meet conditions specified under the law.

The order was issued under special powers the military government that seized power in 2014 gave itself to implement laws without approval from Parliament.

The move came in response to concerns that foreign companies could monopolize the medical marijuana industry, as some had already registered for patents to produce medical marijuana in Thailand, said Arun Max Avery, chief operating officer for Highland, a marijuana advocacy group.

Avery said foreign companies such as Britain’s GW Pharmaceuticals and Japan’s Otsuka Pharmaceutical had filed patents to produce medical marijuana and although their applications have not been approved, they have also not been rejected. Avery said the two companies had “already established themselves in North America and Europe and now they’re making their move in Thailand.”

Avery said part of the concern over the foreign companies’ patent applications was that Thai intellectual property law does not allow natural substances to be patented.

He said the move to sideline the patent applications and wait for the new law might result in conditions making it possible for more Thais to cultivate and consume medical marijuana.

On Dec. 25 last year, Thailand’s legislature agreed to amend the country’s drug law to allow the licensed medical use of marijuana, as well as kraken kratom, a locally grown plant traditionally used as a stimulant and painkiller.

Gibson is now MLB’s all-time career leader in batting average, slugging percentage and on-base plus slugging percentage, and holds the all-time single-season records in each of the categories.

The statistics of more than 2,300 Negro Leagues ballplayers from 1920-1948 launched on Wednesday in a newly integrated database on MLB’s website.

According to the news release, it is estimated that the available Negro Leagues records between 1920-1948 are nearly 75% complete and future findings may result in additional changes to the game’s all-time leaderboards.

MLB announced in 2020 that it would correct “a longtime oversight” and incorporate the statistics of the Negro Leagues, in which Black players competed after being forced out of MLB competition due to racism and segregation laws.

The changes to many long-held records follow an evaluation by the independent Negro Leagues Statistical Review Committee, which was chaired by John Thorn, the Official Historian of Major League Baseball.

“Shortened Negro League schedules, interspersed with revenue-raising exhibition games, were born of MLB´s exclusionary practices,” Thorn said in the MLB release.

Chelsea’s hire and fire culture is BACK

The job description for the next Chelsea manager – likely being drafted as we speak following the almost-shock departure of Mauricio Pochettino on Tuesday – is one full of contradictions. 

The Blues’ hierarchy, now led by co-controlling owners Behdad Eghbali and Jose Feliciano and run by co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Lawrence Stewart are thought to want someone ‘young and progressive’ – but with enough experience to bring silverware and Champions League football back to Stamford Bridge. 

The new manager will be tasked with crafting a new identity and building a ‘project’ at the club, while simultaneously having next-to-no role in player recruitment. 

And they will have to manage a team of raw, under-experienced talents with compassion as well as a fan base used to results at pace and disgruntled after two turbulent seasons. Needless to say, it is not a role that is filled easily. 

Since the May 2022 takeover and the end of the Roman Abramovich era in west London, the picture today is scarcely recognisable to supporters that followed the club through their glory days in the 2000s and 2010s. Instead of battling at the top of the table, Chelsea fans were likely delighted to claim sixth place after ending the 2022-23 season in 12th – and silverware remains a distant dream despite a number of cup final appearances.

Their first, Thomas Tuchel, was inherited, but the German manager came with pedigree. Not only had the 50-year-old previously managed at clubs including Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain, he was considered one of the contemporary game’s finest tacticians. 

He had also managed to pull off a task which might have seemed impossible at the start of the 2020-21 season, when the Blues were stuttering under Frank Lampard, in winning the Champions League. 

A Super Cup and Club World Cup win the following season both helped to bolster Tuchel’s position at Stamford Bridge, as did the then-coach’s thoughtful efforts to guide the club through the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. 

With Abramovich promptly sanctioned by the UK government, Tuchel pledged to ‘drive a seven-seater’ to Lillie himself to see Chelsea feature in their Champions League tie if the club could not circumvent their mandated travel cap. Forced as the club’s public face to opine on everything from his owner, to the war itself, all the way through to the race for the European top-flight positions, the head coach appeared to represent a figure of stability and continuity during the turbulency behind the scenes.

Results on the pitch were shaky. Chelsea sat sixth in the table that September, and had started their Champions League campaign with a dismal 1-0 defeat to Dinamo Zagreb in Croatia. But the cracks were more prominent away for the pitch, amid speculation that Tuchel had lost the support of a number of key voices in the dressing room. 

Even more telling was Boehly’s post-mortem in the days after Tuchel was fired. 

‘Our vision for the club was to find a manager who really wanted to collaborate with us, a coach who really wanted to collaborate,’ the American chief executive said. 

‘There are a lot of walls to break down at Chelsea. Before, the first team and academy didn’t really share data, didn’t share information about where the top players were coming from. Our goal is to bring a team together; all of that needs to be a well-oiled machine.

‘The reality of our decision was that we weren’t sure that Thomas saw it the same way we saw it. No one is right or wrong, we just didn’t have a shared vision for the future. It wasn’t about Zagreb, it was about the shared vision for what we wanted Chelsea to look like.’ 

The sentiment continues to loom large despite its potential for clouded decision-making. It would later become clear that even the ownership believed they might have misstepped with their hasty dismissal of the former coach.

If there is a Frankenstein’s monster of a head coach who can fulfil all of BlueCo’s requirements while feeling stable enough in their position not to be affected by the permanent threat of the sack, despite reassurances to the contrary.

For the talented young manager the ownership group so badly wants, the appointment would represent a gamble potentially too large to take up. When asked in April of last year what he thought of Potter’s sacking, the man who had preceded him couldn’t claim to have been moved significantly. 

‘The timing is quite stunning because it coincides with me starting the job here. Now there’s another coaching vacancy. That’s all,’ Tuchel told reporters shortly after he was unveiled at Bayern Munich. 

‘It was an intense time. But the club has changed massively. That helped me to find some distance,’ he added. 

Some changes have indeed been massive over the last few years. Others have been barely noticeable at all.
